Current and emerging techniques and technologies for Single Tree Inventories
Lee Stamm - 2025
Remote sensing tools can be deployed to do full inventory surveys of the forests of Australia, even to map and describe every tree - known as single tree inventory or STIs. "A centralised and continuously measured national inventory system across multiple tenures is crucial to understand long term trends across Australia’s forest ecosystems", reported Gottstein Fellow Lee Stamm. The benefit of application of this detailed technology is that it provides "information that will enable forests to be managed more effectively to mitigate natural disasters and monitor vegetation change in response to climate change and land use types." Lee travelled to Germany, Norway, Canada and the USA meeting with users of the single tree inventory technology, technology suppliers and academics. His project is relevant to all land tenures.
