DEVELOPMENTS IN THE USE OF WOODY BIOMASS FOR BIOENERGY IN CANADA AND WESTERN USA

This report describes how and why the use of woody biomass for bioenergy is strongly supported
by the Canadian and United States governments at the state/provincial and federal levels with a
focus on the utilization of woody biomass from forests.

Advances in paper coating research

This report summarises the findings of visits to a number of research institutions in
North America including the Nano Science and Technology Institute (NSTI), the
Nanotech conference in Boston and the 10th TAPPI Advanced Coating Fundamentals
Symposium held in Montreal as well as an experimental study in Sweden.

Energy from wood – policies, logistics and economics of bioenergy in Nordic countries

Energy from wood – policies, logistics and economics of bioenergy in Nordic countries

The three countries visited – Denmark, Sweden and Finland – have all developed
bioenergy as their principal form of renewable energy. The aggregate of their
populations is similar to that of Australia. Before the 1970s oil shocks their
dependence on fossil fuels for energy overall was roughly comparable to ours.
Their development of bioenergy since then means that we could draw on their
expertise to provide possible solutions for how we here might proceed to develop
bioenergy using the by-products of our agricultural and the forest industries.

Making research work through knowledge transfer

Knowledge transfer and exchange of information belongs within the larger context of
innovation and change. It forms part of the culture of both the science agency and the
end-user organisation and must be addressed alongside broader topics that include
performance measures and criteria for funding scientific research.

Forest certification in North America – Lessons learnt for Australian forest managers

Forest certification in North America – Lessons learnt for Australian forest managers

Over nine million hectares of Australia’s 164 million hectares of forest is certified to
either the Australian Forest Certification Scheme (AFCS) or the Forest Stewardship
Council (FCS) forest management certification scheme. The certification process in
Australia has found that there has been considerable opportunity for improvement in
stakeholder engagement and communication processes among forest managers.
International findings have been similar.

Plantation nutrition management – Lessons from South-Eastern USA

Plantation nutrition management – Lessons from South-Eastern USA

A study tour was undertaken to south-eastern USA in June / July 2008 in one of the largest
and most important forest regions in the world. The aim was to learn about plantation
nutrition management and research. The tour included attendance at the 11th North
American Forest Soils Conference and post-conference tour across Virginia, a visit to the
Forest Nutrition Cooperative (FNC) and some important field trials along with visits to a
number of forest companies in the region.

Environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

Environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

The new awareness of the concept of sustainable development sets the background for this report. This notion of everyone taking responsibility for their actions in a holistic context is significant. It requires individuals and industry alike to account for their impacts on the environment. Problems exists in measuring environment variable however, and sustainable development is far from quantifiable. Means to allow environmentally consistent scientific and systematic choices are required.

Monitoring biodiversity in Scandinavia: lessons for Australian forest management

Monitoring biodiversity in Scandinavia: lessons for Australian forest management

Dr Rod Kavanagh was the recipient of a 2007 Gottstein Fellowship. This award provided
an opportunity to investigate current developments in biodiversity monitoring in northern
Europe and also to obtain an international perspective about the prospects for using
species-based assessments as indicators of ecologically-sustainable forest management in
Australia.

Evaluation of Australian timbers for use in musical instruments

This report outlines the present use of Australian native timbers in stringed
instruments and identifies species with the potential and availability for utilization in
instrument construction. It also describes component product quality criteria, as
required by instrument makers, and examines the acoustic characterisitcs of
Australian tonewoods both in laboratory tests and in finished instruments.
