This report details the findings of a visit to five research institutes in North America in
March 2007, as well as the 2007 TAPPI Papermakers and PIMA International
Leadership Conference held in Jacksonville, Florida.

Dr Rod Kavanagh was the recipient of a 2007 Gottstein Fellowship. This award provided
an opportunity to investigate current developments in biodiversity monitoring in northern
Europe and also to obtain an international perspective about the prospects for using
species-based assessments as indicators of ecologically-sustainable forest management in
This report outlines the present use of Australian native timbers in stringed
instruments and identifies species with the potential and availability for utilization in
instrument construction. It also describes component product quality criteria, as
required by instrument makers, and examines the acoustic characterisitcs of
Australian tonewoods both in laboratory tests and in finished instruments.
